To get a License

  • 18+ years old

  • Can read at 25m

  • Pass: BTT > PDL > FTT (or RTT) > PDT (or PRT) > QDL > Probation for 1 year (new drivers)

  • Basic Theory Test > Provisional Drivers License > Final Theory Test or Final Riders Test > Practical Drivers Test or Practical Riders Test > Qualified Drivers License

  • PDL (Provisional License Holders) show 'L' plate 18 sq.cm. Can drive with instructor on public roads. Not on express ways and some roads.

  • PDL (provisional) is valid for 2 years. Can be renewed for another 2 years at a time.

  • PDL (provisional) is valid for 6 months. Can be renewed for another 6 months at a time.

  • QDL (Qualified) is valid for lifetime (5 years).

  • New driver probation is for 12 months (1 year). show 'Triangular' probation sign. Monetary fine, if not displayed for the 1st time.

  • 18 demerit points in PDT is pass (in increments of 2). 20 points means failure in PDT.

DIPS : To keep a License

  • 12 or less points during 1 year Probation (for newly qualified)

  • 24 or less during non-probation in 2 years

Suspensions & Remissions : To lose a License or not

  • 1st suspension is for 3 months => 1 month (with accident) or 1 week (without accident)

  • 2nd suspension is for 6 months => 3 months

Risk of license revocation from 3rd suspension.

  • 3rd suspension is for 1 year / 12 months.

  • 4th suspension is for 2 years

  • 5th suspension is for 3 years

To re-obtain license

  • If revoked, need to pass BDT, FTT & PDT

  • If license expired 3 years ago, need to pass BDT, FTT & PDT

Alcohol Limits. However you can still be charged for drunk driving...

  • Alcohol in Breath: 35 micro gram per 100 milliliters

  • Alcohol in Blood : 80 milligram per 100 milliliters => 40 milligram per 50 milliliter

11 License classes: 9 + 2 classes for foreigners (3C & 3CA). Renewals on medical test.

  • 1 - Bike with sidecar for handicapped

  • 2, 2A, 2B, 3, 3A, 3C, 3CA- two wheeler & cars - for 65 yrs and renewed every 3 yrs lifelong

  • 4, 4A, 5 - heavy vehicles & busses - up to 65 yrs and renewed every 1 year up to 69

A for Auto Transmission.

  • Class 3 cars can carry up to 3000 Kgs.

  • Class 3 others up to 2500 Kgs.

  • Class 4 limits: 2500-7250Kgs.

  • Class 5 for > 7250 Kgs.

  • Prolonged wait inside the car when engine is running - Carbon Monoxide Poison

  • Should not drive, if you have epilepsy

DIPS

  • 3 points & $120 for not using seat belts

  • 6 points for offenses involving pedestrian crossing

Seat Belt. Can adult under 1.35m use Child Restraint?

  • Adults and Children of height less than 1.35m shall use Booster Seat or Approved Seat Belt

  • No child restraint for Child under 1.35 m height. No age considerations since 2012.

  • If a child is below 8 years BUT above 1.35m, use Seat Belt and NOT child restraint.

  • No requirement for TAXI. Adults below 1.35m & kids must sit at the back.

  • Driver and all passengers need to use seatbelts
